Glenn Beck, Mary Matalin & Huckabee’s Social Gospel

Listening to Glenn Beck this morning, which, by the way, I am doing less and less, I was once again confounded to hear Mike Huckabee being referred to in terms that would indicate Huckabee believes it is government’s job to take upon itself the obligations of individuals to engage in Christian kindness and charity.

Where does this notion of Mike Huckabee believing in a Social Gospel come from?  What has given them this impression?  I ask, because of course neither Beck nor Matalin gave any examples.  (I was dropping off my grandson at school, so if I missed it, please forgive and enlighten me.)  Under Governor Huckabee, welfare reform reduced the rolls in Arkansas by 50%--approximately the same figure Giuliani boasted of in New York City.  That doesn’t seem to indicate the governor was giving too many handouts of other peoples money!  The only thing I can think of is the infamous college scholarships for the children of illegals which gets brought up constantly to “prove” Huckabee is in favor of open borders (he is not; he wants the border sealed).  I guess it can serve double duty in proving the Governor has misplaced compassions, if you can’t come up with anything else.

I have spent an inordinate amount of time lately researching all the scurrilous attacks on Governor Huckabee, mostly, I admit, for my own peace of mind.  I used to listen to talk radio to give me truthful information and inform me; now I am finding that my "new media" is not to be trusted any more than my "old media."  It's been a rather disappointing election season in that regard.  I don't think our conservative talk show hosts have figured out yet that even though they protest we are not mind-numbed robots, we really aren't.  We are not going along with your assertions that you do not back up with facts.  And now we also have to check your facts.  Talk Radio, with a few notable exceptions, seems willing to repeat almost anything except context.

Show prep should no longer consist of reading me headlines from the Drudge Report.  I've been doing that for myself, thank you, for quite some time--and digging deeper.  The results exonerate Mike Huckabee and indict Talk Radio.
